About this book

The preface to The Cathedrals of Great Britain says the volume attempts an architectural description of all the cathedral churches of England, Wales, and Scotland, with a brief history of each see. The preface explains that much compression was necessary to accommodate an adequate account of each church and bishopric in a portable volume for visitors.

The account of St. Paul's describes the great bell summoning London citizens to their three annual folk-motes at Paul's Cross, where municipal business and disputes were addressed. The account of Lichfield credits Walter de Langton with beginning the Lady Chapel and enclosing the close with a wall and a fosse.
