About this book
The Rev. Arthur Dimock, Rector of Wetherden, Suffolk, gives an account of the old and new buildings of St. Paul's Cathedral, with a short historical sketch and thirty-nine illustrations. His preface says the manuscripts relating to St. Paul's are deficient for the earlier periods and become more complete as time goes on. One passage looks at the early church in London, naming Restitutus, a Bishop of London at the Council of Arles in 314, and quoting Bede on Augustine consecrating Mellitus and Justus.
The numbered footnotes cite sources such as the Parentalia, Dugdale, Clutterbuck's History of Hertfordshire and Fergusson. One note quotes Wren on the term Gothic, another gives his estimate of how far a preacher might be heard, and another compares the proportions of St. Paul's with those of St. Peter's. Dimock also refers to evidence he gave in the Times in May 1899.
