About this book

A jewel's colour and sparkle are only part of what makes it valuable. John Mastin approaches precious stones through their material properties, beginning with rarity, durability and the influence of fashion on price. His 1911 handbook was written in response to a request from diamond merchants, but the preface also makes room for collectors and people whose interest begins at a jeweller's window.

The chapters move through crystal structure, cleavage, light, hardness and specific gravity before turning to cutting, imitations and tests. In the middle excerpt, amber and tourmaline provide examples for his discussion of electrical effects produced by friction and heat. These explanations give the book a more technical focus than a guide to ornaments alone. Readers interested in the history of mineralogy can see how an early twentieth-century writer connected the appearance of gems with the measurements and experiments used to distinguish them.
