About this book

A pink card from a fortune-teller catches Sylvia Bailey’s attention in her Paris hotel. A prosperous young English widow, Sylvia has formed a close friendship with Anna Wolsky, a Polish widow whose enthusiasm for gambling contrasts with her own tastes. Their proposed visit to Montmartre brings together Sylvia’s curiosity, Anna’s belief in predictions, and a disagreement over whether Sylvia should wear her valuable pearls. For Sylvia, those pearls carry the meaning of an independence she has only recently gained.

Later scenes move to Lacville, where dinners and excursions lead back to the crowded baccarat tables. Sylvia waits anxiously for Count Paul de Virieu, while Bill Chester questions the appeal of gambling and Madame Wachner urges the company toward the Casino. The novel offers a close view of social confidence and private unease, with money, affection, and the habits of new acquaintances shaping Sylvia’s experience abroad.
