About this book

A wealthy young English traveller heads for Paris in 1815, eager to enjoy the freedom his new fortune has brought. When he helps a stranded carriage, a veiled woman and her elderly companion seize his attention. He follows them to an inn, fascinated by their manners and apparent rank. His account mixes confident judgments about society with the impulsive curiosity that draws him toward strangers.

Beckett later faces an unexpectedly sharp rebuke over an invitation to a masquerade ball. At the Dragon Volant, he explores a concealed stairway from his room and prepares his money for a planned flight to Switzerland. A mysterious key and carefully arranged explanations to his landlord deepen the atmosphere of uncertainty. Readers interested in romantic intrigue can follow how his eagerness shapes his decisions, while descriptions of dusty roads, old inns, and Paris shops give his account a concrete sense of place.
