About this book
The Chronicle of Jocelin of Brakelond, by Jocelin de Brakelond, offers A Picture of Monastic Life in the Days of Abbot Samson. The edition is newly edited by Sir Ernest Clarke. An account of Jocelin says that, in a speech delivered in the chapter-house, he seems to have been the first to start the view that the convent had made a mistake.
The chronicle describes an abbot who entertained fourteen monks of Coventry in his inn, and who was applauded as noble and liberal in his expenses. A list of dated entries records that the abbot appeals to the Pope, and also sues Bishop Bateman in the King's Court, in 1346.
