About this book
The book is The City of Dreadful Night by James Thomson. The proem asks why one should evoke the spectres of black night to blot the sunshine of exultant years. The text says the City is of Night, perchance of Death but certainly of Night, for never there can come the lucid morning's fragrant breath after the dewy dawning's cold grey air. A river is said to gird the city west and south, the main north channel of a broad lagoon.
The text asks what men are they who haunt these fatal glooms, fill their living mouths with dust of death, and make their habitations in the tombs. The text says such men have much wisdom yet are not wise, and are most rational and yet insane. The text describes a bronze colossus of a winged Woman, upon a graded granite base foursquare.
