About this book
A verse contains a prayer that heaven reclaim a woman’s fading beauty and remould her radiant face in a gentler heavenly form. A note describes a verse written on blue paper and bearing a subscription that places divine things in an azure field, understood there as heaven. The notes explain a comparison between a lady’s cruelty and the hardness of the marble in which her image is wrought, with a subscription identifying the lines as intended for sculptors.
A verse gives Destiny and Chance power over mortals and assigns its speaker a still and sober hour through a likeness of birth and circumstance. A note describes Night as the shadow in which man is engendered, contrasting the day’s breaking of soil for the seed of corn.
