About this book

The Clerk of the Woods is by Bradford Torrey. The opening carries the line News of birds and blossoming, set beside the name Shelley. A section headed Late Summer Notes has the writer passing fields and kitchen gardens not seen since a month ago, and noting the lively green of the aftermath.

The writer watches a hummingbird at a bed of tall cannas in a neighbor's dooryard and notes that the bird went to the red flowers only. The writer remembers first skates, wishing to have them still, with irons that curled up voluminously in front and a complicated harness of straps to keep them in place. The writer says that here, ten years ago, more or less, the writer saw a first gallinule.
