About this book

A list headed Books by John Burroughs names, among others, Wake-Robin, Winter Sunshine, Locusts and Wild Honey, Riverby and Whitman: A Study. The writer names the marsh milkweed as the native plant that takes broad marshes to itself and presents vast sheets of color. The writer describes purple loosestrife as a tall plant that grows in dense masses, and says it shows here and there like purple bonfires.

The writer likes to walk out after supper these days, strolls over the lawn and stands on the brink of the hill. The writer says an April twilight is unlike any other. An entry marked April 12 describes a lovely, bright day on which they plow the ground under the hill for the new vineyard. Crows, as well as most of our smaller birds, always go through the rehearsal of this act of the parent feeding the young many times while the young are yet a long way in the future.
