About this book
The Cleveland Era, with the subtitle A Chronicle of the New Order in Politics, is by Henry Jones Ford. The contents list names, among others, chapters titled A Transition Period, The Free Silver Revolt and Law and Order Upheld. The book says that somehow the American Congress fails to produce capable statesmen, and that it attracts politicians who display affability, shrewdness, dexterity, and eloquence.
The text tells of Mr. Lamar, who had entered the Cabinet as Secretary of the Interior and was nominated for associate justice of the Supreme Court on December 6, 1887. Senator Cullom relates that the nomination pended before the Judiciary Committee for a long time, and the appointment was confirmed January 16, 1888. A proclamation is issued against unlawful obstructions, combinations and assemblages of persons in North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Wyoming, Colorado, California, Utah, and New Mexico.
