About this book
The Fathers of the Constitution, by Max Farrand, is a chronicle of the establishment of the Union. The book forms Volume 13 of the Chronicles of America Series. The text describes Adams staying at The Hague in the spring of 1782 to complete negotiations for a commercial treaty with the Netherlands, while Franklin, the only Commissioner on the ground in Paris, begins informal negotiations alone.
The text reports that there was a general agreement in the Convention that there should be a separate executive. The opinion developed quite early that a single executive was better than a plural body, but the text adds that this was as far as the members could go with any degree of unanimity. The contents list also names the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, the Northwest Territory Ordinance and the Constitution of the United States.
