About this book
The Cliff Ruins of Canyon de Chelly, Arizona is a book by Cosmos Mindeleff. Colonel James Stevenson and a party visited the canyon, and in all 46 ruins were visited, 17 of which were in Del Muerto, with sketches, ground plans, and photographs obtained. A map of the canyon was made by the writer, and many new ruins were discovered, making the total number in the canyon and its branches about 140.
A description of masonry says that below a line the masonry consists of large flat slabs of rock laid in mud mortar, while above the line the stones were carefully selected and the work was well done, the whole being finished by a thin coat of plaster. The text says Canyon de Chelly was occupied because it was the best place in that vicinity for the practice of horticulture, and that the cliff ruins there grew out of the natural conditions, as they have in other places.
