About this book
The College, the Market, and the Court is given in its full title as dealing with woman's relation to education, labor, and law. The book carries an inscription to Lucretia Mott, for more than fifty years a preacher and reformer, spotless alike in all public and private relations. The contents list names, among others, topics such as the Waltham Watch Factory, Dentists, School Committees and Postmistresses.
The Court; or, Woman's Position under the Law is given as three lectures, delivered in Boston, January, 1861. The three lectures are headed The Oriental Estimate and the French Law, The English Common Law, and The United-States Law, and some Thoughts on Human Rights. The text imagines a reader saying that something grew out of that spirit of “caste” which died with slavery, and asks: “Is it indeed dead? Is there no spirit of caste in Massachusetts?”
