Caroline Wells Healey Dall was an American writer, lecturer, and reformer whose long career joined literary work to arguments about education, employment, and women's public standing. Her publications ranged across biography, history, travel, memoir, and fiction. Sunshine appeared as a revised name for a popular lecture on health in 1864, showing her interest in making social and practical questions accessible to broad audiences. Barbara Fritchie, published in 1892, examined the Maryland figure made famous by John Greenleaf Whittier's poem, combining historical inquiry with literary interpretation. Late in life, Dall issued “fog-bells”, more commonly recorded as Fog Bells, as a sequel to her 1903 work Nazareth. These titles belong to very different moments in a writing life that extended for more than half a century. Dall also helped found the American Social Science Association and wrote extensively about women's labor and education.
