About this book
The Comic History of England recounts the Danes under Hasting coming to England in search of food after ravaging France and eating everything they could find there. The narrative says that Alfred drained water from the river Lea and left the Danish fleet aground. The account attributes the draining partly to channels dug between the Lea and the Thames and partly to water removed in buckets.
The discussion of Richard describes a change from overbearing tyranny to submission when his enemies gained the upper hand. The account of a marriage agreement says that the English Government wanted some dowry money sent to England quickly, while declaring no hurry about the bride.
