About this book
The preface links the use of Comic for a subject ordinarily considered grave with a serious desire to instruct through information and amusement. Romulus is said to have reigned for seven-and-thirty years, but the account says nothing certain is known about the time or manner of his death. The discussion calls the existence of Romulus apocryphal and says an elaborate inquiry into his death is not expected until his having lived has been satisfactorily settled.
The naval account says reverses at sea caused Rome to give up naval establishments and sell marine equipment at a ruinous sacrifice. Carthage becomes mistress of the seas but, unable to pay wages owed, begins borrowing money from neighbours. The account says Ptolemy of Egypt was approached for money but declared he had nothing to lend, retaining his money if he had any.
