About this book
The title page reads The Common Spiders of the United States, Boston and London. In the preface the author says there are few books on American spiders, that they are either large and expensive works or special papers little known to the public, and that he has been asked for a smaller and simpler book for readers who want to know a little about spiders in general.
One passage says where to look: crab spiders of the genus Xysticus live under stones and bark, Lycosas run among short grass, Theridiums live between leaves and on twigs, and Misumenas wait among flowers. Page references and figure numbers run through the text, and the species descriptions give details such as the color of the legs and abdomen and the shape of the palpi, with figures cited.
