About this book
The account of rodents in South America describes indigenous forms as much more important, varied and abundant than immigrants, despite the presence of both groups. The porcupine group is described as having its headquarters in South America for ages past, with all of its genera and four families restricted to the Neotropical region. The comparison with North America identifies the Short-tailed or Canada Porcupine as the group's sole genus there and a late immigrant from the south.
The treatment of cats contrasts the long traceable development of sabre-tooth tigers in North America with the much more obscure history of true cats. The anatomical discussion defines a digit as a metapodial with its phalanges, using a term applicable to both the fore feet and the hind feet.
