About this book
This single volume gathers the poems, songs and letters of Robert Burns (1759-1796), a poet who described himself as bred to the plough. The edition was printed in Boston in 1855, with a life of Burns and critical notices by Allan Cunningham.
The poems are written largely in the Scottish dialect and include "To a Mouse", "To a Mountain Daisy", "The Cotter's Saturday Night", "Halloween" and "Holy Willie's Prayer", alongside comic pieces such as "To a Haggis" and the cantata "The Jolly Beggars". The songs are set to named tunes, and many carry editorial notes quoting Burns's letters to Thomson.
The correspondence adds a personal side to the verse, so the book suits readers who want the poems and the man behind them in one place.
