The poems of Mary Howitt is by Mary Botham Howitt. A dedication to Caroline Bowles, an honoured fellow-labourer, says the design of the little book is to make the spirit of Christianity an endeared and familiar fire-side guest. The L’Envoi bids the little book sit down with little children by the way and tell them of sweet Marien how she went over the weary world from day to day.
A poem tells of the lovely Marien, who dwelt within the forest wild and was dearer than a child to the lone old man. The poem describes a lean and rugged man of pelf, in wickedness grown old, who came from some vile city-den and seized upon the gold. A verse describes fir-trees by the garden side towering more stately in their blackness, with the lower trees feathered with snow. A speech labelled Paol. has the speaker, weeping, say “Father, father, Part me not from my mother, and indeed I will go with you.”
