About this book
The natural sciences share a subject, yet their methods and vocabulary raise a problem of unity. Alfred North Whitehead approaches that problem through the meaning of nature itself, beginning with what the senses perceive. Published in 1920, this volume preserves the lecture form of his Tarner lectures at Trinity College. Its chapters examine thought, time, space, motion and objects, building an account of the relationships that make scientific knowledge coherent.
The argument becomes precise as Whitehead considers events, volumes, surfaces and the ways an instant divides an event. These definitions link familiar spatial ideas to his broader philosophy of physics. His preface also explains his differences with Einstein over space and light signals.
