Scientific ideas shape more than laboratories in Alfred North Whitehead's account of Western thought. Published in 1925 and developed from his Lowell Lectures, the book examines how three centuries of science changed the assumptions through which people understand the world. Its chapters move through mathematics, the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Romantic response and nineteenth-century thought before taking up relativity and quantum theory.
Whitehead treats philosophy as a way of examining and reconciling the pictures of reality offered by science, art, ethics and religion. The discussion becomes more demanding when he considers events, enduring patterns, memory and value, asking how individual things persist within a changing world. Chapters on abstraction, God and social progress extend the argument beyond the history of discoveries. Readers interested in the ideas behind scientific practice will find a historical survey joined to a sustained philosophical account of experience and reality.
