About this book

The Country Beyond, subtitled A Romance of the Wilderness, is by James Oliver Curwood. One line says a glass of wine once lost a kingdom, a nail turned the tide of a mighty battle, and a woman's smile once upon a time destroyed the homes of a million people. A scene describes a girl who had dropped her axe and was coming toward them, a slim, bird-like creature with a poise to her head and an up-tilt to her chin.

Peter, worshipping her from his hiding place, is said to find her the most beautiful thing in the world. A man awakens and sees Yellow Bird, whose beautiful eyes look at him steadily and strangely, and she whispers that she has heard something twice and tells Neekewa he must go. A man named Breault nods without speaking, and his eyes rest on Peter as his face breaks into a twisted sort of smile.
