Tom Loudon rides through the Lazy River cattle country with an errand for Kate Saltoun and growing suspicions about missing stock. He works among ranches whose neighbours can also be rivals, and his devotion to Kate complicates his view of the people around her. A reward notice and a sharp exchange with Sheriff Block establish a world where official authority inspires little trust.
William Patterson White's western novel combines cattle rustling, romantic rivalry and the practical demands of life in the saddle. The action moves across ridges, rivers and ranch boundaries, while the dialogue gives the cowhands distinct voices. A later scene brings Loudon back to Paradise Bend with a sprained ankle, where Mrs. Burr insists on caring for him. Readers can expect frontier danger alongside comic arguments, friendship and domestic kindness.
