About this book

Litchfield County's response to the Civil War supplies the focus of Dudley Landon Vaill's brief regimental history. Published in 1908, it traces the local effort to raise the Nineteenth Connecticut Volunteer Infantry, later the Second Connecticut Volunteer Heavy Artillery. Town delegates, recruiting officers, public speakers and visiting families all appear in the account of how the regiment came together at Camp Dutton in 1862.

Vaill presents national events through the experience of one county and its soldiers, drawing on an earlier regimental history and association records. The battlefield account of Winchester follows the regiment's movements under heavy fire, its losses and the praise it received from commanding officers. Readers interested in Connecticut or Civil War history will find a compact account that connects community pride and military service with the strain borne by individual men.
