About this book
At Spring Hill on November 29, 1864, Confederate forces under Hood threatened Schofield's retreat near the Duck River. John K. Shellenberger examines the troop movements and decisions behind that encounter, arguing that its importance extended to Sherman's campaign. His paper combines a participant's recollections with evidence gathered over twenty-five years, including official reports, correspondence, conversations, and two return visits to the battlefield.
Shellenberger commanded Company B of the 64th Ohio and personally saw the fighting. Prepared for a Loyal Legion meeting in Missouri on February 2, 1907, his account repeatedly tests competing versions of events against troop positions, distances, and losses. His judgments of commanders can be severe. It suits readers interested in Civil War campaigns and in the disagreements that shape accounts of a battle.
