A reward notice nailed to a pine tree gives Rathburn an unwelcome introduction to San Jacinto County. The rider studies the description of the wanted Coyote, adds a note about a larger reward in Arizona, and rides toward Dry Lake. Hunger draws him off the trail to a small ranch, where a young woman offers food and a boy challenges his teasing remarks about freckles. James Roberts opens his Western with desert scenery and a fugitive whose good humor sits beside constant watchfulness.
Later scenes bring Rathburn into contact with a suspicious deputy and Sautee, a mines manager who entrusts him with a package of money for delivery to the mine. Quiet conversations, wary questions, and a late visit to a hotel room give the adventure its sense of uncertain loyalties.
