About this book

The Day of Sir John Macdonald is by Joseph Pope and is described as "A Chronicle of the First Prime Minister of the Dominion". The prefatory note speaks of "the great statesman who, half a century ago, laid the foundations and, for almost twenty years, guided the destinies of the Dominion of Canada."

The text says that a young man "barely twenty-one years of age" opens "a law-office in Kingston, at that time a place of less than five thousand inhabitants," and that two lads come to him to study law. In Macdonald's first case, at Picton, he and the opposing counsel "became involved in an argument, which, waxing hotter and hotter, culminated in blows." The crier shouts "Order in the court, order in the court!" and adds in a low voice, "Hit him, John!" Edward Blake's "outward bearing was cold and unsympathetic", and to a caller who proposed a walk he would "tartly reply", "I have work here that will keep me for the next two hours."
