About this book
The title page presents The Description of a New World, Called the Blazing-World as the work of the Duchess of Newcastle. The contents list an address to the Duchess of Newcastle, an address to all noble and worthy ladies, a second part of the description and an epilogue to the reader.
In one passage a lady is carried across a series of islands. Fox-men who walk upright receive their neighbours the bear-men with civility, admire the lady, and agree to make her a present to the Emperor of their world. She crosses rivers in boats like fox-traps and bird nests, and meets men with the heads, beaks and feathers of wild geese, and satyrs, who all understand each other's language. In another passage the Empress asks spirits where Heaven and Hell are, and they answer that Christ told mortals there is a Heaven and a Hell but not what or where they are. The talk before it turns on Purgatory and the vehicles of souls.
