About this book
Philosophical Letters is described as modest reflections upon some opinions in natural philosophy, maintained by several famous and learned authors of this age, expressed by way of letters. The contents list, among others, pieces addressed to the Lady Marchioness of Newcastle, to the Lord Marquis of Newcastle, and to the most famous University of Cambridge, and a preface to the reader.
One letter, addressed to Madam, says it seems she is offended at the writer's opinion that Nature is Eternal without beginning. A letter says God is an Immaterial and Spiritual Infinite Being, while Infinite Matter is quite of another Nature, to wit, Corporeal, when God is Incorporeal. A letter says several Seeds seem to the writer no otherwise than several Humours, or several Elements, or several other Creatures made of one and the same Matter. The writer confesses that the philosophical opinions are not so plain and perspicuous as to be perfectly understood at the first reading, and gives two chief reasons, the first being that they are new, and never vented before.
