About this book
The Diary of a Freshman is by Charles Macomb Flandrau. The narrator writes that Mamma left for home this afternoon, and confesses that before she went he sometimes thought he should be rather relieved when she was no longer there. Mamma has a fixed idea that the narrator came to college to get his feet wet by day and sleep in a draught by night, and began furnishing his rooms with a pair of rubber boots.
The narrator asks another person a string of questions on his mind for months, among them whether it is better to live in a private house, one of the big private halls, or in the Yard. A list headed Rooms in the Yard gives as an advantage that General Washington may have stabled his horse in your bedroom. The narrator says he was sick and that friends came to his room from early in the morning, and that the only volume among his books that was not fiction was a thing called The Statesman's Year Book.
