About this book

The Different Forms of Flowers on Plants of the Same Species is a book by Charles Darwin. The volume is dedicated by the author to Professor Asa Gray as a small tribute of respect and affection. The contents list names chapters, among others on Heterostyled Dimorphic Plants: Primulaceæ, Hybrid Primulas and Cleistogamic Flowers.

The writer says that he examined fifteen trees of the common Ash (Fraxinus excelsior) growing in the same field during the spring and autumn, and that eight produced male flowers alone, and in the autumn not a single seed. The text reports a large field of young sugar-cane in St. Catharina, in Brazil, many acres in extent, covered with the red blossoms of one form alone, which did not produce a single seed. Mr. Scott states that Eranthemum ambiguum bears three kinds of flowers, including large, conspicuous, open ones, which are quite sterile, and others of intermediate size, which are open and moderately fertile.
