About this book
The preface to The Movements and Habits of Climbing Plants says the essay first appeared in the ninth volume of the Journal of the Linnean Society, published in 1865. The preface says the essay is reproduced in a corrected and, the writer hopes, clearer form, with some additional facts. The preface adds that the illustrations were drawn by the writer's son, George Darwin.
According to the essay, the common Convolvulus revolves in an opposite course to the Hop and becomes twisted in an opposite direction. The essay says the best evidence that the twisting does not cause the revolving movement is afforded by many leaf-climbing and tendril-bearing plants. The text says a tendril, as soon as it is ready to act, stands vertically upwards with its supporting petiole, and that if no object is caught the leaf with its tendril bends downwards.
