About this book
The Doctor's Dilemma is "A NOVEL BY HESBA STRETTON". The contents list names, among others, "PART THE FIRST" and "PART THE SECOND". The narrator says "I have very few friends, and they are all far away in Australia. I was born there, and lived there till I was seventeen". The narrator says Tardif, "who was afraid of losing the cutter which would convey him to Sark," had "only time to give me the address of a person with whom I could lodge".
The chapter headed "A SAFE HAVEN" has "all was hurry and confusion" at St. Peter-Port, "for goods and passengers had to be landed and embarked for Jersey". A first-person voice says "I remained at home, alone, evening after evening, unless I was called out professionally, declining all invitations". Tardif says "Dr. Martin was heart-broken" and that "His cousin Julia, who was to have been his wife, was married to Captain Carey three weeks ago".
