About this book
On a windy November afternoon, Helen Lingard settles beside the fire after writing to her brother Leopold at Cambridge. Her dissatisfaction with a novel starts the narrator’s examination of comfort, received opinion and the effort of thinking for oneself. George MacDonald introduces her through domestic details and pointed commentary, making ordinary habits part of a larger inquiry into how people understand their lives.
This Christian novel develops its religious concerns through family relationships, sermons and questions of conscience. In the middle excerpt, Helen fears public shame for Leopold and resists advice that places duty alongside consolation. The narrator considers guilt, confession and the possibility of putting wrongs right. Readers interested in fiction about faith will find moral argument closely connected to personal distress, with the curate’s counsel tested against a sister’s fierce concern for her brother.
