About this book

The Dream (Le Rêve) is by Émile Zola, with a contents list of chapters numbered up to XVII. The title page also gives the work as translated by Eliza E. Chase.

Chapter I is set in the severe winter of 1860, when the river Oise was frozen over, and on Christmas Day, especially, a heavy squall had almost buried the little city of Beaumont. The text says the child Angelique Marie had been given on June 20 to the care of Theresa, wife of Louis Franchomme, both of them makers of artificial flowers in Paris. A character named Angelique says that she was treated as if she came from the gutter. Angelique is quite conscious of what is passing around her when at last she sees Felicien striding over the balustrade of the balcony.

Émile Zola

Émile Zola (1840-1902) was a French novelist and the leading figure of literary naturalism. His twenty-volume Rougon-Macquart cycle traced one family under the Second Empire, and his open letter J'accuse in defense of Alfred Dreyfus reshaped the writer's role in public life.
