About this book

Pierrette is by Honoré de Balzac. A dedication to Mademoiselle Anna Hanska asks how the writer can dedicate a story full of melancholy to her. The text says Jacques Brigaut was worthy of Pierrette Lorrain, who was just fifteen.

The text says that two great statesmen of the little provincial town made everybody believe that the priest was in sympathy with their ideas, so that before long Provins began to talk of him as a liberal ecclesiastic. The text says Pierrette's bedroom was above the study of her new guardian, and Madame Lorrain slept in a cot beside her grandchild. The text says that from her window Pierrette could see the whole of the glorious valley of Provins.
