About this book

Leaving a Pacific island with his new wife Ruth, Mr. Craig sets out for America in the company of Mrs. Lecks, Mrs. Aleshine and his difficult father-in-law, Mr. Enderton. Frank R. Stockton continues the adventures of the two women in this sequel to The Casting Away of Mrs. Lecks and Mrs. Aleshine. A wait for a suitable ship, a return through San Francisco and a rough stagecoach ride give the party plenty of occasions for disagreement.

The comedy grows from practical concerns as much as travel mishaps. Mrs. Lecks firmly defends a householder's right to lock up an island home, while Mrs. Aleshine wonders whether food could be left for stranded visitors. Mr. Dusante's account of returning to his property brings these competing views into conversation. Readers interested in friendship and everyday manners will find outspoken characters whose ideas about comfort, hospitality and responsibility keep the dialogue lively.
