About this book
A gloomy walk across Green Park leads Paul Gosslett to an offer of work and a confused government interview. A young Englishman has been captured by brigands in Calabria, and Gosslett is proposed as the man to carry the ransom and report on the captors. He needs a livelihood, while his friend promises that a successful mission could bring public recognition and further employment. Charles Lever uses their conversation and the minister's misunderstandings to bring out the comedy of seeking official favor.
Later, Gosslett reaches a windswept house above the Atlantic and meets Dan Dudgeon, his wife and their daughter Lizzy. The parson's strong political loyalties create recurring friction in his isolated parish. Descriptions of rough ground, a roof weighted with stones and a fireside welcome place these encounters in a sharply observed landscape. The novel combines adventure with comic portraits of officials and hosts, offering readers an account of personal hopes entangled with institutions and local disputes.
