About this book

Rashleigh Allerton and Barbara Walbrook cannot get through a conversation about their engagement without turning it into a contest of wills. Barbara objects to his friends and habits, while Rashleigh resents the authority of her wealthy aunt. An engagement ring becomes a bargaining piece in an argument that lays bare how poorly the couple understands each other's expectations.

Published in 1922, Basil King's romance places personal attachment beside social standing and financial ambition. Another part of the story follows Letty Gravely's prospects for a small role at a film studio. Her stepfather, Judson Flack, hears of the opportunity and immediately thinks of the earnings it might bring, then seeks information from a detective he distrusts. Readers interested in early twentieth-century relationships will find a novel in which family influence, pride and the hope of advancement press on private choices.
