'Gloria Victis!' A Romance

In fashionable Paris, Baroness Melkweyser has a promising marriage proposal to put before Count Truyn and his daughter Gabrielle. She treats the arrangement as another advantageous opportunity, while Truyn objects to discussing his daughter's future in the language of a business deal. Ossip Schubin's romance opens among balls, charity visits, fashionable purchases, and family conversations, using the baroness's breathless chatter to expose the calculations beneath polished social manners.

Fritz Malzin, a nobleman, struggles to provide for his wife and children after appeals to family acquaintances bring little help. Pride makes asking difficult, debt sustains the household, and his son Siegi finds comfort in stories of Schneeburg. These scenes give the novel a second register beside its social comedy: close attention to dependence, disappointed expectations, and parental affection. Readers interested in aristocratic society will find both its rituals and the painful consequences of losing its support.
