About this book
The Emerald of Catherine the Great is by Hilaire Belloc, with illustrations by G. K. Chesterton, and is dated 1926. A dedication addressed to Maurice Baring says that this is the fourth book dedicated to him, and that he has often urged the writer to write a detective story. The dedication says of Catherine the Great that she plays no long part, but she founded the fortunes of them all.
The text says the emerald came to be known as The Emerald of Catherine the Great in the private circle of the de Bohuns. The Professor says that an instrument tells a crystal close at hand. The Home Secretary was badly blown and felt groggy, and groped for a pint of champagne which he knew to stand by.
