About this book
W. W. Jacobs is the author of The Old Man of the Sea, which carries illustrations from drawings by Will Owen. Mr. George Wright asks an old sailor to be an uncle to him, an uncle from New Zealand who is going to leave him all his money. Mr. Kemp asks how he can be a rich uncle without any brass, and Mr. Wright says he would have to lend him some, a little. Mr. Kemp is shown fetching his sea-chest from the boarding-house where he was staying, accompanied by Mr. Wright, and taking it to the young man's lodgings.
Mr. Hills says "I'm not a patch on you" as he edges his way by slow degrees into the parlour. Mr. Kemp says of Charlie Hills that he does not know when he has taken such a fancy to anybody, and calls him a "Clever, lively young fellow".
