About this book
John C. Joy's book is about the emperor Marcus Aurelius. A chapter headed 'Life in the Palace' begins with the saying that no man is a hero to his valet. Another passage deals with Faustina and with Commodus, and quotes the first book of the Meditations, where Marcus thanks the gods for a wife he calls 'so obedient, so affectionate, so simple'.
Elsewhere the text describes Justin and six of his disciples being brought before the Prefect of the City, Junius Rusticus, after the Cynic Crescens had denounced him. Their exchange is given: the Prefect says to obey the gods and do what the Emperors command, and Justin answers that he has settled in the doctrine of the Christians. A later passage quotes a description of the wise man as content with acting justly in what he now does.
