About this book
Gilbert Slater's The English Peasantry and the Enclosure of Common Fields studies how English village land was held and later enclosed. One chapter, headed The Wessex Type of Village Community, takes two Dorset manors, Stratton and Grimstone, and looks at Fordington Field near Dorchester, which lay unenclosed until 1875 and was divided among about eighty copyholds.
Slater works through holdings called a half-place and a farthing hold, asking how many horses each carried a common right for and what that suggests about joint ploughing in a plough team. Another passage looks at Bedfordshire, where 46.0 per cent of the area was enclosed by Act of Parliament, and quotes Walter Blyth's The English Improver of 1649. The author also writes that he deemed it a matter of conscience to keep the attitude of mind of a student of history, and acknowledges Earl Carrington, President of the Board of Agriculture, for reading the book in proof.
