About this book
The Origin of Property in Land is a work by Fustel de Coulanges. A preface says the essay, here translated, appeared in the Revue des Questions Historiques for April, 1889. The preface says the essay presented, in a comparatively brief compass, all the main arguments of that great historian against the various attempts to support the theory of primitive agrarian communism by an appeal to historical records.
The volume is translated by Margaret Ashley and carries an introductory chapter on the English manor by W. J. Ashley. The text says Gibbon long ago pointed out that the grant by the King of the South Saxons to St. Wilfrid, in the year 680, of the peninsula of Selsey showed that there, at any rate, there was a dependent population. The text says four circumstances are supposed to prove that private property in land did not exist, and the writer states that not one of the four appears to him to bear that consequence.
