About this book
The Evolution of Modern Orchestration, by Louis Adolphe Coerne, lists an appendix of musical illustrations and a preliminary historical review of instrumental music in its contents. The discussion of earlier musical practice says troubadours, minstrels and minnesingers combined solo singing with instrumental accompaniment, while their efforts contained elements of the dramatic. The account of Bardi and his coterie identifies their aim as producing drama faithful to the purity and idealism of classic models, while calling their conception a fallacy.
The discussion of Lobe's treatise criticises his strictures on Wagner's supposedly overloaded orchestration and says he deliberately sought examples supporting his adverse judgments. The musical illustrations list repeated entries for Midsummer Night’s Dream, including entries labelled Notturno.
