About this book
How Music Developed is subtitled a critical and explanatory account of the growth of modern music. The discussion of descant describes singers ornamenting an additional part above the chant, with the practice offering opportunities to display their voices and musical skill. The account says the voice carrying the chant was called the tenor and explains the difficulty of keeping the parts together without musical measure.
The discussion of notation describes Neumes as indicating the direction of the voice and the number of notes through which the voice should pass. The account of Haydn says that he had been in London and heard some of Handel's oratorios.
