About this book
Robert Koldewey's account of the work at Babylon, in a translation by Agnes S. Johns, comes with 255 illustrations and plans. The pages sampled describe the Ishtar Gate, whose walls still stand 12 metres high and are covered with brick reliefs, and the approach to it by way of the Procession Street.
Elsewhere the text turns to finds and measurements: limestone balls of different diameters and weights, a ditch dug south of the Citadel where the street crosses a watercourse, and walls called the Nabopolassar wall, the Nebuchadnezzar wall and the Nabonidus wall. Another passage lists temples with their dimensions in cubits and the gods they were dedicated to, among them Nebo, Hea, Nusku, Anu and Bel. The frontispiece shows a coloured enamelled vase.
